SAVANNAH - MCO Transport, Inc. joined forces with TICO Terminal Equipment, Sea Garden Seafood, NYK Lines and the Georgia Port Authority to help with relief efforts to the areas left devastated by Hurricane Katrina earlier this week.
An MCO Transport truck left Savannah Thursday destine for Harrison County, Mississippi, just 3 days after the storm plummeted the gulf coast region. With a load of ice donated by Sea Garden Seafood of Crescent, GA loaded into a 40' refrigerated ocean freight container on loan by NYK Lines of Atlanta, GA the truck set course on a 550 miles journey to the desperate area in hope to provide a little relief.
"We have coordinated these efforts for hurricane relief since Hugo 1989 in Charleston and I can tell you they are always extraordinarily well received and appreciated," explained Randy Booker, CEO of TICO Terminal Equipment.
The blocks of ice are being delivered to the Harrison County Sheriff's Office, in a county where Katrina is responsible for at least 100 deaths. With roadways still impassible in the region and areas where the extent of damage has not been assessed, getting relief where it is most needed is going to be challenging. "We are going into an area with little or no power, fuel or means of communication making coordination with the right people very difficult," explained Ryan Andresen, Division Manager with MCO Transport, Inc. "Our truck is equipped with a satellite communication device which will allow us to keep in touch with the driver and track his progress into the region."
